Colours of Resilience
Program Overview
Colours of Resilience is an annual flagship event hosted by the Community Alliance for Accessible Treatment (CAAT), designed to centre the voices, experiences, and leadership of racialized, newcomer, and 2SLGBTQI+ communities in the HIV and health landscape.
The event was born from a clear and persistent reality: through our work with racialized, newcomer, and immigrant, refugee, and non-status (IRN) communities, we have consistently seen that the people most impacted by HIV research are often excluded from the spaces where that research is shared, interpreted, and debated. Academic and clinical settings frequently rely on language that is highly technical, inaccessible, and disconnected from the lived realities of the very communities whose bodies, stories, and experiences inform this work. Traditional HIV conferences tend to centre researcher-to-researcher dialogue, creating environments that are neither culturally safe nor welcoming for community members.
Colours of Resilience intentionally disrupts this model.
It creates a community-first space where research is translated into accessible language, where lived experience is recognized as expertise, and where art, culture, and storytelling are honoured as essential forms of knowledge. This space affirms that communities deserve to learn about the research that involves them, to ask questions freely, to contribute their insights, and to see their experiences reflected and valued.
Through this approach, Colours of Resilience bridges the long-standing gap between research and community realities; ensuring that knowledge flows not only from researchers to community, but also from community back into research, practice, and policy.
Purpose of the Program
The primary purpose of Colours of Resilience is to ensure that communities disproportionately affected by HIV are not removed from the conversations that shape their care, their bodies, and their futures. The program aims to:
Democratize knowledge by making HIV and health research understandable, relevant, and actionable for community members.
Celebrate resilience, using art and cultural expression to amplify community stories, identities, and strengths.
Promote dialogue and accountability, strengthening connections between researchers, service providers, and community voices.
Build collective understanding, empowering participants to engage with research that impacts their daily lives and advocate for equitable systems of care.
Program Scope
Colours of Resilience brings together diverse stakeholders—community members, researchers, frontline workers, artists, and partner organizations—in a multifaceted program that includes:
Knowledge Exchange Sessions: Research presentations, interactive panels, and community dialogues focused on translating evidence into accessible insights.
Creative and Cultural Showcases: Performances, visual art, spoken word, and storytelling that highlight lived experiences and celebrate community identity.
Community Recognition: Honouring individuals, leaders, and grassroots efforts contributing to health equity, HIV advocacy, and community resilience.
Networking and Collaboration: A platform for forging new partnerships, strengthening sector relationships, and encouraging co-creation across disciplines.
Program Impact
Through Colours of Resilience, CAAT continues its commitment to community-driven knowledge translation and exchange (KTE) by ensuring that HIV research is shared with and shaped by the communities most impacted.
Through this work, Colours of Resilience continues to build a more informed, inclusive, and collaborative HIV sector; one where communities are not just present but empowered to shape the conversations and decisions that affect their lives.
